New Sub-Culture Art: the Tattoo

If you are thinking about getting a tattoo, you’re in good company. Tattoos have been around for over 5000 years and evidence of ink has been found in nearly every ancient culture. From the Egyptians to the Romans to the Celts to Vikings, each group used tattoos for slightly different reasons.

While it is true that tattooing has always been primarily about self-expression and decoration, some groups used tattoos to reflect the status of the individual. For example, a great warrior would often receive tribal tattoos if he had performed well in battle.

These days, however, tattoos are really more about personal expression than they are about status. Though, it is still common for people, men mostly, to get a tattoo to celebrate a milestone or special moment in their lives, such as a marriage. As for our modern day warriors, our soldiers, there is definitely a New subculture art that most of our armed forced adhere to. Although, military tattoos in the modern era are less about celebrating a warrior’s prowess on the battlefield than they are about camaraderie and unity.

In popular culture, tattoos are used to express freedom and independence, especially for women. Years ago, tattoos on women were a definite taboo. But with the help of a few free-spirited female celebrities, the female tattoo has never been more popular.
